Many people who cruise Yakima Avenue are glad the Yakima City Council is taking action on the city cruising ordinance on Tuesday.  Council members are expected to approve an amendment to the city cruising ordinance that allows cruising on Yakima Avenue every Saturday in June, July, August and September.
The action is the result of weeks of discussions and some people cruising the avenue outside of the specific ordinance dates. Instead of repealing the ordinance as some wanted the council to do earlier this year the council decided to increase cruise days. Yakima Police say having specific days to cruise allows them to plan better for officers to be in the downtown area.
The council on Tuesday is expected to get an update on COVID-19 and talk with Yakima Police Chief Matt Mathews. The chief wants to talk to the council about what's called a Truth and Reconciliation process for policing.
Two public hearings are also set for Tuesday. City officials say anyone wishing to comment during either hearing should call 571-6001 once the hearings are opened.
Please e-mail ccouncil2@yakimawa.gov if you wish to provide written comment to the City Council. Written comments received by 3:00 pm on Tuesday, June 16th, will be provided to the City Council prior to the meeting.
The meeting, at 5:30 Tuesday is conducted by speakerphone since city hall remains closed because of COVID-19 concerns.
