The Yakima City Council has a short agenda for the Tuesday meeting at Yakima City Hall. The Council is expected to talk about the cities ongoing Safe Routes to Schools program. The effort lead by council member Dulce Gutierrez has been to identify the routes that are used the most frequently by walkers to area schools. In fact that's been a strategic priority of the council. Gutierrez, who is the chair of the city public safety committee wants the routes identified in the Yakima and West Valley School districts.

The information gained is being used to make sidewalk, lighting and other improvements to increase safety.

The program is being funded through district, state and local taxes.

No particular problems or serious crashes have been reported on any of the routes to schools.

The council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Yakima City Hall.
