SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The children of a Spokane Valley woman have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against their adoptive father in a shooting that a medical examiner rule accidental.

The Spokesman-Review reports that the suit filed Wednesday by Gabrielle Corriette and Michael Thurman accuses Dwayne Thurman, a former soldier and reserve deputy, of not trying to save their mom, Brenda Thurman, after admitting he shot her in the chest.

Court records show Dwayne Thurman said the day of the January 2016 shooting he had started to clean the gun to figure out why it wasn't functioning properly.

The suit claims Dwayne Thurman didn't perform CPR or other life-saving measures afterward. Attempts by the newspaper to reach him were unsuccessful.

Spokane County sheriff's detectives are investigating. That probe has stalled as investigators await test results determining whether the Glock was functioning correctly.
