Yakima Radio Stations-The Reasons Why You Don't Like Them All

The Townsquare Media radio group in Yakima (the home office) has six radio stations under its roof at 4010 Summitview Avenue so there is a lot of music going on around here.

Rock on 94.5 KATS, Pop 107.3 KFFM, County 92.9 KDBL, and Classic Hits of the 80s and 90s MEGA 99.3.

It May Not Be Normal To Like All Music

Even the sports talk ESPN 1460 and news talk (us) AM1280 KIT stations use music in their shows so there is music pouring out of every door. Add to that the fact that newsman Lance listens to "his" music as he walks about three miles around the halls of the building each day.

I have to say much of it is not my "jams." A lot of it I plain don't like...and that's normal.

Scientists say disliking certain kinds of music is indeed normal. You probably have genres you don't care for but did you ever wonder why?

Why We Dislike The Music We...Dislike

German researchers think they know. Their study has just appeared in the Open-Access journal PLOS ONE. They have determined people dislike music for three basic reasons:

1) object-related reasons (such as composition or lyrics),

2) subject-related reasons (emotional or bodily effects or discrepancies with self-image),

3) social reasons.

A report in EurekAlert indicates musical dislikes may serve to maintain a good mood, facilitate identity expression, or help define a social group.

The most often mentioned type of dislike was musical style, followed by artist and genre,... points for describing musical dislikes: the music itself, lyrics, performance, artist, and the people who listen to it.

Apart from the reasons for disliking music, participants in the study described specific reactions they have when confronted with music they dislike. These included emotional, bodily, and social reactions, ranging from leaving the room to breaking off social contact. (that sounds like me when 99% of all rap and new age music(?) comes on!)

I'm a classic rocker, southern rock, big hair bands from back in the day, and suffice it to say, I feel underrepresented on the radio, but with all the variety of music Town Square cranks out every day, we do hope we have something you enjoy...and if you don't, well now maybe you'll understand a little better why you don't!
