Veterans Day Ceremony Instead of Parade This Year
The COVID-19 pandemic has cancelled or delayed a lot of events in the past 7 months but it won't cancel Veterans Day on November 11.
However because Yakima County remains in Phase 2 of the state 4 phase reopening plan the annual Veterans Day parade along Yakima Avenue isn't allowed. Instead a Veterans Day ceremony is planned at Sarge Hubbard. The ceremony is sponsored by the Marine Corps League of Yakima and is set for November 11 at 1:00 p.m.
The ceremony will be held under the flagpole. Everyone is invited to attend. Organizers say don't forget to wear a mask.
Also on Veterans Day a Blue Star Memorial Marker will be dedicated at Yakima's Tahoma Cemetery. The event is set for 11:00 a.m. November 11, Veterans Day 2020.
The marker was donated by Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs Central District and is meant to honor World War II veterans. A news release from the city says;
"This will be the first Blue Star marker in the city of Yakima.
The Blue & Gold Star Memorials Program honors all men and women who have served in the United States Armed Services. This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II."
