SEATTLE (AP) — The University of Washington is getting $210 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help build a new facility to advance efforts to improve the health and well-being of people around the world.

The donation from the largest private foundation in the world is the largest single gift in the university's history. The donation was announced Tuesday.

The new building would serve as a research hub for faculty and others working on an ambitious new population health initiative to address challenges such as poverty, health care access, equity and climate change. The total facility cost is $230 million and is expected to open in late 2020.

The private foundation is located just miles from the Seattle campus. The donation is the largest single gift to the university.
