Some people in Yakima said they're upset about tree removal along South Naches Avenue, but the city said it's for their own safety.

The city has contracted with a company to cut down seven large trees and trim several others this week at a cost of around $16,000.

A couple weeks ago, the city said a large tree limb fell and damaged a parked car on Naches Avenue. They said no one was injured but it could have been much worse.

"Every time the wind blows, branches come down and we're starting to get property damage," said Chip Rognlie with Yakima Parks and Recreation. "We certainly don't want to have people get hurt. The first two trees they took down were spongy in the middle and were really really rotten, and we're amazed that they're still standing."

The city said new trees will be planted after they determine what types will fit in best along the Naches Avenue Parkway.
