SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle police are investigating after a young boy with a gunshot wound showed up at Harborview Medical Center.

Seattle police said on their website that the child's mother and boyfriend brought the 2-year-old to the hospital Monday morning and told police the child was injured in a Seattle motel room.

Detectives said Monday afternoon they believe the toddler's injuries resulted from the toddler handling a loaded handgun. Police say the boy had emergency surgery and is expected to survive.

Detectives will pursue a felony weapons violation against the boyfriend, who police say is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess firearms.
