SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A Seattle Police Department captain identified as a finalist for the job of police chief in Spokane has dropped out of the running.

The Spokesman-Review reports James Dermody told the city's recruiter Wednesday morning he no longer wanted the job.

Three finalists were announced last week. Dominic Rizzi, chief of the Yakima Police Department; and Robert Lehner, chief of the Elk Grove, California, Police Department, were set to be interviewed for the position Wednesday.

City spokesman Brian Coddington has said the next chief could be chosen as early as mid-August.

The new chief will be the seventh person to lead the department in the past five years.
