Choose a bran muffin for breakfast this morning if you’re hoping to add some years to your life. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says people who include more fiber in their diets tend to live longer.

A study to be published in the Archives of Internal Medicine explains the type of fiber found in whole grains, beans, fruits, nuts and vegetables helps aid digestion, lowers cholesterol and improves blood glucose levels. The reports past studies have shown eating fiber can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

The NIH study of nearly 390-thousand people concluded a diet high in fiber reduced the risk of death from any cause over a nine-year period.
