Brave Fire Teams Saved Property During Last Year’s Retreat Blaze
Remember the big Retreat Fire that burned thousand of acres?
FIREFIGHTERS FROM ALL OVER
At this time last year firefighters from all over the state and Yakima County were helping to douse flames in the big Retreat fire. The fire burned 45,601 acres and was fully contained in August of 2024.

AN ACCIDENTAL FIRE
The cause? It was blamed on a fire at a cabin in the Rimrock Retreat area on July 23. That blaze, which started near a propane tank spread quickly eventually turning into the Retreat Fire.
REHAB WORK STILL UNDERWAY
Crews spent weeks last year replacing 2,100 feet of guard rail and 350 posts to ensure safety along the highway. Firefighters were on the scene for days after the major flames were doused actively patrolling containment lines, extinguishing remaining hot spots, and clearing hazards from internal road systems.
THE CANAL WAS DAMAGED
Forest officials say they've done a lot of rehab work in the forest in the area of the fire. Work is still underway to make major repairs to the Yakima Tieton Irrigation District Canal that was closed for days during the fire so officials could check damage to the canal.
WEATHER HELPED FIREFIGHTERS
The weather eventually helped Firefighters battle the fire. The combined efforts of firefighters, aerial support, and favorable rain conditions lead to a reduction in the fire's intensity and eventually the fire was contained and out.
Over the last year as recovery continued....people in the area are still thankful for the brave firefighters and first responders who worked tirelessly to protect lives and property throughout the devastating blaze.
