In 1870, the first official Federal Census count of the population of Yakima (then called North Yakima) showed about 440 people living in the frontier town. That number had roughly tripled from the original 150 or so pioneers who founded the town four years earlier.

By the time Yakima turned 50 years old, the city’s population had grown to about 25,000. When Yakima celebrated its Centennial, there were more than 52,000 people living here.

Today, 125 years after it was incorporated, newly-released US Census data shows that Yakima’s population now tops 90,000..91,067 to be exact.
