This is the week a plan to deal with nitrates in lower valley groundwater could be put in place. After spending years studying the problem with the help of landowners, dairy ranchers and farmers no single source has been found for the nitrates. But a report on a plan to deal with the problem has been issued. The Groundwater Advisory Committee on Thursday is expected to take a vote on the plan. A meeting is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Denny Blaine Boardroom at 810 E. Custer Ave. in Sunnyside. If it's approved it will eventually make its way to the Yakima County Commissioners for final approval.
The plan calls for new land requirements for farmers and dairy ranchers and also suggests extending municipal water service to rural areas.
