In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the words to "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of 1812.
On March 3, 1931, "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the official U.S. national anthem.
