BANGOR, Wash. (AP) — The Navy has announced the next commander of Submarine Group Nine.

The Kitsap Sun reports the Navy said Monday that Rear Adm. John W. Tammen will take over for Rear Adm. Dave Kriete, who became commander in July 2014. Submarine Group Nine includes eight of the country's 14 ballistic-missile submarines and two guided-missile subs.

Tammen is deputy director of plans and policy at U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.

He previously served as engineer officer on ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada, commodore of Submarine Squadron 19 and squadron engineer on the staff of Submarine Squadron 17.
