A short agenda for the Yakima City Council for the first meeting of the new year next Tuesday including the swearing in of a new council members and city mayor and assistant mayor. The most recent mayor was Kathy Coffey but she decided to not run for re election in 2020.
The mayor is a ceremonial post. The person is chosen by other city council members.
Yakima city voters will be asked in November to change the city charter to allow a strong mayor form of government. If the vote is successful the person running for mayor would be elected in the 2021 election cycle.
A news release from the city says "during the November 5 General Election, Eliana Macias was elected to the District 1 seat previously held by Dulce Gutierrez, who did not seek re-e-election.
In District 3, Patricia Byers was elected to the City Council seat held by Carmen Mendez, who did not run for re-election.
In District 5, Soneya Lund won the seat previously held by former Mayor Kathy Coffey, who also did not seek re-election.
Councilmember Holly Cousens was re-elected to her District 7 seat in the General Election. All will be sworn in during the ceremony Tuesday."

The Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Yakima City Hall.
