10 Forbidden Side Hustles You Can’t Do from Your Home in the City of Yakima
TL:DR: If you want to start a home-based business and you live in the city of Yakima, check out this list of prohibited ones before you make your first sale.
In Yakima, there are several things that you need to have a permit for, including operating a home-based business. Some businesses you might want to do out of your home, however, are not allowed.

I am shocked to see some of these side hustles listed under the prohibited list. The city ordinance says that they are banned (in residential urban areas) because they could decrease the property values and uses of your neighborhood.
I guess I could see that being the case, like if you run Business #10 out of your home for instance, you might start displaying those dead creatures on your front porch or all over the yard.
Or if you start fixing people's cars on the side like Business #1, you might block the sidewalks and off-street parking spaces that would otherwise be used by people who live on your street.
According to the Yakima's permitted urban area zones, there are 10 types of businesses we can't operate out of our homes. You must instead perform these jobs in a commercial or industrial setting.
- 1. Auto repair
- 2. Antique shop or gift shop
- 3. Kennel
- 4. Veterinary clinic or hospital
- 5. Painting of vehicles, trailers or boats
- 6. Large appliance repair including stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers
- 7. Upholstering
- 8. Machine and sheet metal shops
- 9. Martial arts school
- 10. Taxidermist
- 11. Two-way radio and mobile telephone system sales and service
- 12. Vehicle sign painting (except for the application of decals)
