When the Yakima City council meets at city hall for a study session on Tuesday (10:00 a.m. at city hall) they'll be discussing the planned YMCA city aquatic center at Chesterly Park on 40th Avenue. The city and the YMCA have joined forces to create the aquatic center at the park with a goal of opening the facility in 2019. YMCA Executive Director Bob Romero says the location will serve a lot of people in the 40th Avenue area that are under served now.  Plans for the center include a lazy river, lap pool and warm water therapy pool coupled with a new YMCA at the park. Funding comes from both the city of Yakima and donations. Romero says so far they've raised about half of the $20 million funding to build the facility. They hope to break ground next year and have the aquatic center open in the spring of 2019. The new YMCA would be funded by the YMCA itself.
The current facility will stay open in the downtown area.
