A lot of people are flying into and out of the Yakima airport this year and city officials say it's a result of a major marketing campaign called Fly YKM started back in 2013. City Economic Development Director Sean Hawkins says in May of this year "5,833 people flew from the Yakima airport an increase of 852 over may of 2015." And he says more people flew into the Yakima airport last month as well. 5,900 people flew from the airport that's 916 more people than may of 2015. He says each flight is an economic tool for the valley. Hawkins says more people are discovering it's easier to fly out of Yakima and not have to go through security at Seatac and more people are taking advantage of the additional afternoon flight by Alaska Air added in October. He says additional flights could be available later this year as well.
