A 28-year-old man is being held in the Yakima County jail after Yakima Police say he slashed a woman in the throat with a knife at the Yakima Fred Meyer store on Saturday. The woman, in her 60's is expected to recover.
Capt. Jay Seely tells KIT News Muhammad Haris Tariq, described as a local transient was arrested by Yakima County Sheriff's Deputies Saturday night in the West Valley area. Seely says the man walked into the store on North 40th Avenue Saturday pulled a knife, walked up behind a woman slashed her throat then walked away. He left the store in a vehicle. The woman was taken to a Yakima hospital where she was treated for a non-life threatening wound.
Seely says the suspect didn't know the woman.
Yakima County Prosecutor Joe Brusic says Tariq was arrested in mid-April for a felony violation of a protection order and felony eluding. While in jail he went through mental screening and was transferred to Yakima's Comprehensive Healthcare for a 3 month treatment. But last Thursday he walked out of the facility and was arrested Saturday in West Valley in connection with the assault.
