Say Farewell to the Last Death Chamber Jail Cell Left in Washington State
Washington's Deadliest Jail Cell Is Finally Sealed Off For Good
I think it's creepy that we've had a "death chamber" in our state this whole time and I knew nothing about it until today!
Fox41 News reports that Governor Inslee finally shut down Washington's last remaining and deadliest jail cell for good, according to the original report from King5 News.
WHAT THE HECK IS A DEATH CHAMBER?
A death chamber is the place they take a person who's been convicted of crimes so horrible that they've been sentenced to death. There's been one lying inside the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla since the year 1904! That's 120 years ago!
DOES WASHINGTON STATE HAVE THE DEATH PENALTY?
Some seventy-eight people have met their end inside our death chamber. We haven't had any criminal executions in Washington since 2014 because that's when Governor Inslee signed into law a ban on death by hanging and/or lethal injections.
The Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty Board advocated fiercely to get the death chamber room closed, as reported in the Reuters video below.
WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON EXECUTED IN WASHINGTON STATE?
**TRIGGER WARNING**
Cal Coburn Brown was the last person who executed in Washington's deadliest jail cell. He was killed in September 2010, convicted of aggravated first-degree murder. His crimes included carjacking, sexual rape and torture, and then stabbing Holly Washa to death. Brown had also attempted to kill another victim in Palm Springs, California. He chose to be executed by lethal injection.
