This Is a Cold Weather Hack We Can Use Right Now

There is a trick that will let you know if your freezer food has thawed. A social media user inside the Old Recipes That Stir Childhood Memories Facebook page shared the “One Cup Tip.”

At first glance, it seems dumb, but when you think about it, it could save you some grief.

Social media can be a great place for finding hacks, especially in community groups where they share different life lessons!

How Does the One Cup Tip Trick Work?

If you experience a power outage from something as simple as a winter storm when a car takes out a power pole and the electric power breaker pops or if you accidentally forget to close your freezer door, this quarter-in-a-cup trick will help you know if your food in the freezer is safe to eat.

The One Cup Tip is simple: Freeze some water and then place a quarter on top. That’s it. Seems dumb and pointless, but it has a very valuable point, so keep reading.

If the quarter is still on top of the ice, nothing thawed, and you should be good to go. But if the quarter is under water (or possibly frozen in the middle of water), then it’s a good bet your food has also defrosted (or possibly refroze) and might not be safe to eat.

NOTE 1: During times of power outages, don’t keep opening up the freezer to see where the quarter is; that won’t help anything.

NOTE 2: I recommend using a plastic cup, so you don't risk it breaking when the water is freezing.
