It's cold in Yakima and other parts of eastern Washington state in the winter months. But it's nothing like the cold in Republic Washington which is considered the coldest place in the state.

A very small population of 1,000 residents the former mining town had a much larger population during the gold rush days. At the start of the 20th century many people left the town not only because of the lack of gold and opportunities but because it's also so darn cold.
REPUBLIC SEES A LOT OF SNOW EVERY YEAR ALONG WITH THE COLD TEMPS
Republic is located in the northeastern part of the state with an annual average weather temperature of 43.8 degrees year round. The town sees an average of 52-inches of snow every year.
REPUBLIC HAS SET THE BAR FOR COLD TEMPS IN WA
Did you know Republic holds the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded in the United States? The record was set on January 20, 1954 when Republic recorded a temperature of a bone-chilling -69.7 degrees.
OH IT WAS DANG COLD IN JANUARY IN REPUBLIC
This past January the town saw temperatures as low -10 degrees during the middle of the month, the coldest place in Washington state.
Regardless of the weather Republic sees thousands of people every year who love the outdoors. The town is known for it's mining camp and as the home to the Spokane and British Columbia railway, also known as the “Hot Air Line” railway.
