This is pre-spring barrel tasting weekend. It’s great chance for us locals to get the lowdown on the area’s wine and winemakers. It’s a shakedown cruise for next weekend’s spring barrel tasting tourism season kick off. It’s billed as a “bring your own glass” event.  Guess what, according to an article from the UPI? When it comes to wine it really does matter which glass you bring!

Applied technology gets it done again as scientists developed a camera system that was able to observe how the chemical profile of wine is altered as it exits different shaped containers.

They discovered that different types of wine poured from different shaped containers produced starkly different concentrations and distributions of ethanol. This can affect a taster's ability to identify the subtle food flavors in a wine.

Interestingly traditional wine glasses produced a distribution of wine concentrated around the rim of the glass, with less ethanol in the center which according to the lab coat crew allows us to enjoy the wine aroma without interference of gaseous ethanol. Accordingly, wine glass shape has very sophisticated functional design for tasting and enjoying wine  (UPI)
