People in Washington are being warned to be extra vigilant as scam callers are ramping up their activity to take advantage the upcoming holidays and of increasing amounts of people being at home due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Authorities are warning people in Washington to be on their guard for a rise in bogus calls, emails and text messages. The most popular at this time of year is the charity scam. You may get a call from someone claiming to be from a charitable organization which is collecting donations for individuals, groups or areas affected by COVID-19. The caller will ask you to send cash donations in the mail, by wire transfer or by gift card. If you get a call from a charity before you give the BBB says make sure you are familiar with the charity and if you have any questions check it out at BBB.org.
The other popular scam at this time of year is the fake holiday job scam. BBB officials reminds you employers will never ask for payment upfront for a job. Be wary of job offers that don’t require an interview, watch out for companies that offer big money for small jobs and never work for a company before they hire you.
