Half of Gun Owners Store Firearms Safely, Yakima Event Aims to Change That
If you own a gun one way to make sure it's secure is to use a lockbox or a trigger lock. But not a lot of you gun owners use those devices when the guns aren't in use.
ONLY HALF OF ALL GUN OWNERS
In fact according to Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions only about half of all gun owners store the weapons safely with a trigger lock or lockbox. They say using those devices help reduce injuries, homicides, suicides, and mass shootings.

THE DEVICES ARE MEANT FOR LONG TERM STORAGE
But it's a different story in an high-stress emergency situation because they don't open fast and depending on the design they may even be tough to install to actually protect the trigger. It's the same with lock boxes. The devices are good for long term storage but not if you need immediate access for your personal protection. You can get those devices for free on Saturday, October 25 in Yakima.
A PARTNERSHIP FOR SAFETY
The Yakima Health District has partnered with Alliance for Gun Responsibility and Safe Yakima Valley to host the Safe Firearm Storage Giveaway event. Everyone is allowed to get free lockboxes and trigger locks while supplies last. Along with the giveaways you'll get training on the use of the devices as well.
TWO BIG EVENTS SATURDAY
The free giveaway event will be held next to Safe Yakima Valley’s Shreds and Meds event on Saturday, October 25th from 9:00 am-11:00 am at the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce at 10 N 9th Street in Yakima.
The Shreds and Meds event is set for 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
