If you've been thinking of getting a concealed carry permit and you live in the city of Yakima, how do you go about getting one? The first thing you should know is that you have to be at least 21 years old to carry a concealed pistol.

Concealed Pistol Permit in Yakima 101

After you purchase your gun and some ammo, you'll need to decide if you're going to join the ranks of the concealed carriers. If so, you'll need to apply for the Concealed Pistol License (CPL), which you can do in person at the Yakima Police Department (200 S 3rd St in downtown Yakima). If you don't live within the city limits, you can go to the Sherrif's Office (1822 S 1st St, Yakima).

You'll have to bring your I.D. (or passport), pass the background check (expect that to take up to 30 days) and you'll be asked to make an appointment for fingerprints.

You can apply anytime during the week from Monday-Friday 10:00am-4:00pm (Excluding Federally Recognized Holidays).

The cost is a non-refundable application fee $48 if this is your first CPL license.

The Fine Print

Remember, you can only use your firearm in Washington State when you feel your life is in danger, says Yakima County Prosecutor Joe Brusic.

If you have a felony, you're not allowed to carry a gun in Washington. The same goes for open cases, pending trials, bench warrants, outstanding warrants, probation, supervision, or parole conditions where you are prohibited from carrying/possessing firearms for a litany of legal reasons.

CPL permits are valid for five (5) years, so if you want to renew, you'll have to go through the process again with a non-refundable $32 application fee.

You can check out the Yakima Police Department's page for more in-depth info, but at least now you know the basics. If you have questions let 509-575-6220
