A big change for those celebrating the 4th of July in Moxee this year. The city is now requiring permits for those who want to celebrate with fireworks.

THE GROWING PROBLEM

The city of Moxee has implemented changes in the city fireworks ordinance for private property. The growing costs of monitoring the situation and complaints prompted the changes. A press release from the city of Moxee says those caught using fireworks without a permit can receive a citation.

WHERE TO FIND PERMITS?

The $50 permits are available at Moxee City Hall until Noon on July 3. The release says "most of the City of Moxee residents are responsible and do a great job of abiding by the ordinances that have been in place, but unfortunately not all the people that flock to the City of Moxee are as responsible."

A CONCERN ABOUT GROWTH

Those who want to light fireworks on private property will have to register the address where the fireworks will be used and only on private property. City officials say they're concerned that the size of the event has grown with several serious incidents over the past several years.

LOTS OF CITY RESOURCES

City officials say Moxee Police work overtime and city employees spend hours cleaning up afterwards. All that work has cost the City of Moxee a lot of money every year to continue the event.

CAN YOU USE FIRWORKS?

Some lower valley cities also require permits. Check the ordinances in your area if you plan to light fireworks. Fireworks are banned in the city of Yakima.  The press release from the city of Moxee ends by saying; "Please help us keep this form of celebration possible by simply complying with the new ordinance."
