Yakima firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a fire in an apartment at 718 north 6th Avenue at about 2:30 Monday preventing it from spreading. The resident who was home at the time heard the smoke alarm and found her recliner and floor was on fire. She was able to escape with minor burns to her arm and was released at the scene.

At the time of this fire, the crews from the nearby Station 91 were out on another fire, a brush fire off of I-82. Additional units from Station 92 and 93 responded to this fire containing it to the furniture in the living room. Officials say the fire was started by the resident “improperly” using a lighter.
Firefighters are calling the fire off of I-82 on Monday suspicious. It was reported at about 2:00 p.m. near U.S. Highway 12 and burned grass and brush near the R Street underpass. One Westbound lane of I-82 was closed in the area as firefighters doused the flames. The cause is under investigation.
