Work is underway to demolish the old Yakima County jail next to the Yakima County Courthouse. The four story building was built in the 1940's and housed more than 100 inmates. County Commissioner Ron Anderson tells KIT News. "It has far outlived any usefulness to us. It's become a hazard actually."
Anderson says even though the jail was no longer in use and sat empty for years the county still had to maintain it and that Anderson says, was a waste of taxpayer dollars.

After the jail is demolished and the area cleaned up Anderson says they'll expand the courthouse parking lot. He says the area could be used in the future for the expansion of the Yakima County Courthouse.
