I’ve never made a secret about disliking my wife’s cat. I’m allergic and she’s annoying (the cat not the wife) and it has been a tense truce the past ten years. (16 yrs old and the dang critter won’t croak!)
One of the main points of contention is the litter box. More than just being foul and obnoxious, it turns out what’s in the stuff that’s in the box could be downright dangerous!
For lack of a better way to put it, there is a cat poop parasite, called T.gondii that’s been associated with schizophrenia and changes in behavior.
A study of more than 45,000 women in Denmark suggests that those infected with a parasite that's carried by cat poop were at higher risk of suicide.
Researchers can’t say for sure that the litter was to blame for the increased suicide attempts but they say it points to the need for more study.
The parasite can also cause flu like symptoms in people with weakened immune systems.
