Yakima Police will soon be paying a bit more to keep inmates at the Yakima County Jail. For years Yakima Police has paid the Yakima County Jail to house the men and women they arrest who can't be placed in the county jail. Up until now the city never had to pay for the last day of custody. but now our news partner KIMA Action News has found that final "free" day no longer fits into the jail's budget. Starting this month the city will have to fork-over the costs for every inmate's final day of custody, meaning an extra $84,000 the department will have to pay every year. That's more than a police officer's salary.
