Child Hurt After Train Strikes Car Near Cle Elum

CLE ELUM (AP) — A railroad official says a 7-year-old child suffered a leg injury Sunday after a train hit a car he was riding in when the car got stuck on the tracks at a spot about 80 miles east of Seattle.

BNSF Railway spokesman Gus Melonas says the boy was one of eight people in the vehicle when it became stuck about 5:30 p.m. on a stretch of track near the town of Cle Elum.

Melonas says a train headed from Portland, Ore., to North Dakota hit the vehicle, but the 7-year-old was the only one injured.

The train was traveling below the speed limit of 49 mph on that stretch of track, according to Melonas, who adds that the two people operating the train were not hurt.

Melonas says BNSF is investigating the accident.
