This weekend will be a busy weekend as thousands of people from the Yakima Valley and around the country travel for the Memorial Day weekend. In fact officials at AAA Travel say they expect a significant increase in the number of American's who are traveling this upcoming Memorial Day weekend. They say from May 27 through May 31, more than 37 million Americans are expected to drive and fly 50 miles or more from home. That's an increase of 60% from last year when some 23 million Americans traveled. That was the lowest number recorded on record since AAA started keeping track of travel trends back in 2000. AAA Travel says last year the pandemic impacted travel and the numbers fell. But they also say the strong increase in travel this year still represents 13% or about 6 million fewer travelers on the road and in the skies than in 2019.

However a lot of people won't be traveling to far away destinations this upcoming holiday weekend which is the first official travel day of the season. Many people say they're just planning on staying close to home doing some camping or fishing in favorite spots in the woods.

If you are staying in Yakima you are invited to Memorial Day services on Monday at two different locations and two different times. The first service will be held at 9:00 a.m. at West Hills Memorial Park. The second service is set for 1:00 p.m. at Sarg Hubbard Park on the Yakima Greenway. You and your family are invited to attend the services and thank those who have made sacrifices for this valley and this country.
