Cows Not Cars Closing State Route 821 Saturday

The Yakima River Canyon will be congested this weekend not with cars but with cows. Saturday is the annual Eaton Family cattle drive that moves hundreds of cattle from grazing land in selah to their home. The hundreds of cattle will make the trek starting at the Roza Recreational area and ending 6 miles North at the Eaton family ranch.

The drive will take most of the day Saturday

The drive is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Drivers can expect long delays on State Route 821.
Drivers are urged to use I-82 during the cattle drive.

Cattle drives used to be a big thing in the west

Did you know cattle drives were a major part of the economy in the 19th and 20th centuries? According to Wikipedia during the time 27 million cattle were driven from Texas to Kansas. The cattle were then placed on rail cars and shipped to stockyards in Louisiana and other areas on the east coast. "The long distances covered, the need for periodic rests by riders and animals, and the establishment of railheads led to the development of "cow towns" across the frontier."

The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.
