5 Things Yakima Can Jack-O’-Lantern Besides A Pumpkin
If the old man on the porch whittling things has taught me anything, it’s to not come on his property, and also with a knife, patience, and an inanimate object, you can do anything that deals with a knife and an inanimate object.
With it being the season of everything Pumpkin, and me not liking pumpkins, I decided to carve up some things that are not pumpkins. Why do I not like them? Maybe it’s the mess, the seeds, the fact that the “pumpkin flavor” is everywhere. For me, it’s mainly the smell, I cannot stand the pumpkin smell. I will say, carving these pumpkin alternatives, the smell was pretty good. Especially number four. All of these I found at the local grocery store, no problem (5 might be a problem for some). Without further ado, here are 5 Things Yakima Can Carve Besides A Pumpkin.
Number 1: A Pepper
Might as well start easy. The whole thing is pretty much hollow to begin with. Plus, with it being soft, it was pretty easy to slice up a face. Another bonus, with peppers coming in different colors, you can choose what best fits your mood.
Number 2: A Potato
Not as easy as a pepper, but it wasn’t the toughest thing I carved during my research into this project. The hardest part was finding a big enough potato to make it worth while, plus cramming a candle in it. But no need to bake it (although it might have made it easier to hollow out and tastier!) I just cut the top, sliced up the inside, found my smallest spoon and started scooping.
Number 3: An Apple
DO NOT CARVE AN APPLE! It was a pain in the butt, even the biggest apple will be a pain in the butt. I had to remove the whole core, straight down to the bottom. It was the toughest one to hollow out, and took me the longest. The best part about it, was as I screwed up, I got to eat the ruined apples.
Number 4: A Pineapple
This was my favorite. Smelled nice and with the right tools, it was the easiest. Luckily my wife had a “pineapple corer”, line that up right and then just twist. A couple minutes later, it’s done. The only difficulty I found when carving the pineapple was drawing the face. Really didn’t work, so I had to go freehand.
Number 5: A Watermelon
I didn’t personally try to carve one of these bad boys. (I didn't want to risk the potential mess). But man, when you can do it, they look awesome. Check out this video below.
