The Yakima Police Department will soon retire K9 officer Dexter and the department is now raising funds to replace Dexter who's been with the force for more than 6 years. Police spokesman Mike Bastinelli says the K9 officers are vital to the department. You can help raise fund for the K9 program on Saturday. The YPD is inviting everyone to the 2nd annual “9k4k9” Fun Run and Walk at Yakima's Franklin Park. the event opens at 10:00 a.m.on Saturday with the fun run and walk starting at 11:00 a.m.
You'll also have a chance to see see K9 demonstrations from the YPD, Yakima Sheriff’s Office, local fire departments, USFS, and other first responders.
You can enjoy food from the Zirkle food truck, goodies from Tree Top, a dog groomer, face painter and bouncy houses.
Saturday, May 12 is also the kickoff for National Police Week where the nation celebrates all members of law enforcement.
