Chicken Tops Pepperoni as Top Topping

Nobody here but us chickens!   Alas poor pepperoni, we knew you well and for years as the most popular pizza topping…BUT no more!  Chicken is now the most popular meat topping for pizza in the U.S., according to report from Technomic.

Perhaps it because of the flexibility of this bird of bounty. Favorite preparations include barbecued, Buffalo chicken, Thai, Southwest, curry, chicken parmesan and chicken Caesar.

HOWEVER there is a big caveat…chicken's rule of the pizza roost is only for full-service restaurants; chicken comes in third when it comes to fast food or limited service outlets. Analysts also found that we're eating more pizza, with 41 percent of consumers polled saying they eat pizza once a week, compared to 26 percent who said the same two years ago. One of the main reasons is the growth of gourmet ingredients and innovative, specialty pizzas.
