America has a shortage of truck drivers and that shortage is even being felt in the Yakima Valley.

The American Trucking Association estimates that the U.S. is short 30,000 truck drivers.

Yakima Valley Community College Workfirst Coordinator Kayla Crawford says YVCC hopes to get more truckers behind the wheel through its truck driver training program.

They learn in the classroom and gets lots of hands-on training. We cover all the information needed to take the licensing test.

And Crawford notes that the classes are not limited to men.

It’s great to have female truck drivers. It’s definitely a field that’s open to them.

The class at YVCC is offered once every quarter. The next class is starts Sept. 8. Meantime, if you've already got your training and license, Yakima's Haney Trucking is holding a job fair on Aug. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Haney Trucking is at 3710 Gun Club Road in Yakima.
