Yakima’s Election System Being Challenged

The city of Yakima's election system is in the spotlight after two residents filed a federal lawsuit last year saying the system prevents Latinos from being elected to the city council.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed the suit in U.S. District Court. Attorneys for the ACLU are in Yakima taking statements from city council members as it prepares the lawsuit this week.

The ACLU has partnered with Central Washington University administrator Mateo Arteaga and Rogelio Montes, a student at Yakima Valley Community College in filing the suit.
