Auto theft is big in Yakima and to help curb the problem, the Yakima Police Department will be giving away steering wheel locks this week, particularly hoping owners of Honda Civics and Honda Accords get in line.

Lt. Mike Pollard tells KIT News, “Unfortunately the Hondas are the No. 1 stolen vehicles. Both the Accords and the Civics. So we’re doing what we can. Hopefully this will deter someone from stealing one of the vehicles they would normally try and take.”

The Yakima Police Department has purchased a limited supply of the steering wheel locks to be given away beginning today.

Police will be giving the devices away at the Millennium Plaza from 6-7 tonight. On Wednesday, police will be at the Albertsons at 16th and Lincoln from 3 to 4 p.m., and then on Friday police will be giving away the steering wheel lock devices at Dutch Bros. Coffee at the West Valley Walmart between 10 and 11 a.m.

If you miss getting one of the free devices, police urge you to buy one for your vehicle to help prevent it from being stolen.
