The Yakima Police gang unit is set to double in size, thanks to a increase in city tax revenue. Five officers are in the unit, they work a five day rotation. City Manager Tony O'Rourke and Police Chief Dominic Rizzi, Jr. want to double its size. O'Rourke says the gang unit does not have time to investigate gang crime. It only has time to respond to such crimes.

The city has been talking about expanding the unit since the beginning of the year. O'Rourke tells our news partner KIMA Action News the half million dollar cost will be covered by increased sales tax revenue. The new unit could be in place by the end of this year or early next year.
