Want to learn how to compost in your backyard? Yakima County Solid Waste will be presenting a free Backyard Composting class on Saturday, March 28th.

The class takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Terrace Heights Landfill, 7151 Roza Hill Drive.

According to County officials, organic waste including yard debris, wood waste, food and agricultural waste contributes approximately 30 percent of the waste received at its landfills.

“One of the easiest and most effective ways to help save space at the landfill is to backyard compost,” said Mikal Heintz, Program Coordinator for Yakima County Solid Waste. “Many people are a little intimidated by the process because there is so much information out there, but it can be as simple or difficult as you make it…compost happens regardless.”

The backyard composting class is open to residents of Yakima County only. Pre-registration is required. The class includes a landfill tour and a pick-up load of finished compost. There will also be a drawing for a free compost bin and thermometers. “The goal of the class is to teach the basics, in an informal setting, where every participant will be able to go home and get started immediately,” stated Heintz.

To register for the backyard composting class, please call Yakima County Solid Waste at 574-2450.
