Authorities have arrested a suspect in Monday's killing of 14-year-old Kabin Smith of Yakima.

According to a Yakima Police news release issued late Friday afternoon by Capt. Jeff Schneider, YPD and members of the Yakima County Violent Offenders Task force took the suspect, 23-year-old Luiz Barrera of Yakima, into custody at about 3:30 Friday afternoon.

YPD detectives were processing Barrera, who is expected to face a first-degree murder charge and be booked into the Yakima County jail.

Police offered no further details.

Smith was hit at Cornell Avenue and West King Street about 11:25 a.m. Monday as someone fired multiple shots from a passing car. Smith fell on the sidewalk and was taken to a hospital, where he died.

It was the sixth homicide of the year in Yakima. Police have said they believe the attack was gang-related.
