Changes are in the works for Yakima's Randall Park this year and most of the work this month is focusing on the duck pond.

City Parks and Recreation Manager Ken Wilkenson says workers are preparing the pond area for a new observation deck, which is being funded by a $30,000 donation from the Southwest Yakima Rotary Club.

The work means a lot of older trees around the pond had to be removed.

"We're sad about that, but to do the work we had to remove the trees. But they'll be replanted," he says.

Wilkenson adds city workers also plan to rid the water of debris and sediment. He says it's a three-year project. This year the city hopes to replace restrooms and possibly create a new playground area.
And work continues at the dog park next to Randall Park. The city has recently installed a gated area for smaller dogs in the back of the dog park.
