• This year's Ted Robertson Community Service Award will be announced Tuesday morning during a press conference at the Chamber office on North 9th Street in Yakima.

    Last year Jan and Greg Luring, the owners of area McDonalds restaurants were chosen as recipients of the annual award given by the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce.

    The award was established in 1989 to honor a person or people who have made a big impact on making the valley a better place to live.

  • Yakima firefighters were busy with two house fires on Monday.

    The first was reported at about 2:30 p.m. in the 700 block of South 2nd Avenue. A fire was found in an attic. Fire investigators say it was caused by an electrical problem. The fire was quickly doused by firefighters. Damage is estimated at $25,000.

    The other fire happened at about 5:00 p.m. at a home in the 1600 block of McKinley Avenue. Firefighters also found fire in the attic. The flames were put out and the cause is under investigation. Damage is about $8,000.

    No injuries were reported in either fire.
