Spokane School to Collect Half of $3M Levy After Clerical Error

SPOKANE (AP) — School officials in Spokane say the East Valley School District will collect just half of a $3 million transportation levy due to a clerical error.

The Spokesman-Review reports that the district failed to certify the levy, which was approved by voters last year. This means that the county didn't collect any of the levy money in 2016. A

The levy was supposed to be used to replace aging school buses. With only half of the levy money, district officials will be able to buy 12 or 13 new buses — which would replace half of the district's fleet.

District Superintendent Kelly Shea says the district will consider putting a $1.5 million transportation levy back on the ballot in the near future.
