TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Rep. Adam Smith says President-elect Donald Trump "ran the most bitter, divisive, and negative presidential campaign in history."

In a statement Thursday the Democrat said Trump "claims he wants to change his tone. For the sake of our country, I hope he does."

Smith, who represents Washington's 9th Congressional District, said he hopes the Republican Trump will try to create good jobs, increase equality and respect all Americans' rights.

"However, if he continues to divide us as a nation, I will fight him every step of the way," said Smith, who was first elected in 1996.
