The Yakima Police Department is looking for officers to fill the ranks and Chief Dominic Rizzi is concerned that recent killings of officers could affect recruitment.

Rizzi tells KIT News "You have a lot of individuals that never really considered law enforcement and if it's brought up to them this will have a negative impact. So it'll be harder to get individuals who maybe never thought about law enforcement as a career."

Rizzi says 11 positions are open in the department, down from 19 earlier this year. He says it's a tough job -- especially with news of another officer being killed on Tuesday. Rizzi says they're looking for people who can do the job and not be intimidated about its dangers.
