MOUNTLAKE TERRACE (AP) — Police in Mountlake Terrace say they won't recommend criminal charges against a man who shot and nearly killed a companion of his niece who was reportedly trying to steal his guns.

The Daily Herald reports that the man's niece, 19-year-old Jessica Bride, showed up at his house in August with 27-yaer-old Said B. Osman under the pretense of trying to buy a gun from him. Bride told police that they planned to rob her uncle.

The 57-year-old uncle became uncomfortable with the situation and asked them to leave. About two hours later, at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 31, Bride showed back up at his door. He then heard a noise from his bedroom and found Osman climbing through the window onto a nightstand.

The uncle shot the intruder in the chest with a 9 mm pistol. Osman has spent months on a ventilator, under sedation, at Harborview Medical Center.
